Now let me tell you: After we knew how much we LOVED Vermont and were so looking forward to going to Montreal, Lake Placid was kinda the "eh" portion of our trip. We just thought it would be a nice place to relax after a few busy days and a lot of hours in the car. But let me tell ya, as soooon as we pulled into town, I was in LOVE. DROP DEAD IN LOVE! I don't know if it was the great mountain views, the charming main street or just the pure damn magic of a two-time Olympic city, but I was immediately HOOKED!
Not only THAT, but I had planned all of ZERO meals for this portion and after meal #1, I knew we were in a great place for noshing too:) We started at "Simply Gourmet"...how can you hate on a place that looks THIS adorable??
"Simply Gourmet" was this little breakfast/lunch/baked goods type place...and their claim to fame is not 1, not 10...but FORTY SIX SANDWICH VARIETIES!!! (Actually 45, #46 is a "create your own" if you can't find one you like:)
And it was a TOUGH pick with things like "Maple Mayo" and FOUR variations of my beloved tuna sandwich tempting me. In the end, I went with the #43: The Blake Peak Sandwich...
Bacon (suchhhh good bacon!), green apples & smoked cheddar cheese on a caramelized onion foccica roll (oh yeah, they also had 8 varieties of bread to pick from!). And if that wasn't wonderful ENOUGH....that soup??? PEAR SQUASH!!! OH FALL HEAVEN if I do say so myself! I was thoroughly smittened (and full!) when we left:)
After our exceedingly warm & cozy lunch, we headed out and THANKFULLY took FULL advantage of some of Lake Placid's "outdoor destinations" (you'll see why:)....first heading to the top of the famous ski jump platform...
...and took in the STUNNING "High Falls Gorge" that we discovered on our drive into town. Sooo beautiful!
And after our lovely little day, we ended up at one of MOST cozy places EVER...and I couldn't have been MORE THRILLED with this place:
I was damn near GIDDY after seeing the TWO fireplaces and all of the dark wood and cozy trimmings! (well, that and the fact that I could TASTE...officially!:)
And sadly, I got even MORE excited when this adorable little loaf of fresh-from-the-oven sourdough showed up at our table. YUM! :)
And since "local" was also a good theme of this trip (well, usually all of our trips!)...we also sampled this Saranac special Orange & Creme soda....cause WE. LIKE. TO. PARTY...ya know? :)
And as soon as I saw "Chicken Fireside" on the menu, I KNEW it was my pick:) Chicken with Canadian Bacon ANDDD LOBSTER with hollandese sauce:) YUM!!
Truth be told, I actually think I was even MORE excited for the BAKED POTATO:) Scott got half of this chicken, but I HOUSED that entire potato...skin & all:)
And how could we NOT wrap up a fireplace/FALL/cozy dinner WITHOUT some WARM Apple Crisp...Answer: You can't...you MUST have it....
Anddd...what was really great was that our cute little motel "The Placid Bay Inn" was a nice over-the-hill walk to the main street. And since it was a beautiful, crisp and mild night out, we got a nice little walk in before AND after dinner. The only bad part: We only got to do that once:(
Beccccausseeee...we woke up with a hell storm on Friday! Cold rain & LOTS of wind (so umbrellas need not apply for this day!) We sought our breakfast refuge in the recommended "Saranac Sourdough," that was right up the street from our motel....how cute is this place??
Now let me preface by saying I had done some research and found out that the "Lake Placid Lodge" made some of the areas best pancakes. Sounds great, except that they were included with a breakfast buffet, all in total coming to $28. EACH! FOR PANCAKES. So how happy do you think I was when we found out that "Saranac Sourdough" had some of the BEST pancakes we've ever had AND for LESS than the cost of ONE of the Lodges pancake breakfasts?? Cheap + Delicious = a happy Donna & Scott:)
I went with the Adirondack Flapjacks and Scott tried their Sourdough version. They were just PERFECT...and straight off the grill, because it's such a small place. That doesn't happen OFTEN, so we enjoyed it thoroughly!
After breakfast, we had a deluged visit to watch the bobsled & luge teams practice on the Olympic training course (which involved the climbing of a muddy hill in the torrent of rain...not pretty:) And then headed for some INDOOR activities at the Olympic Center for a tour of the stadium....
(Home of the 1980's "Miracle" Hockey Game!)
...and to the Olympic Museum....
Anddddd...much to our surprise (considering it was MID-OCTOBER!) by the time we left the stadium, the rain had officially turned over toooooo:
YEP! SNOW! What are the odds of that????? (See why we were thankful to get the 'outdoor stuff' out of the way???) This day, we decided we were going to walk around town and instead of lunch, we were going to pick up treats along the way. So the wind whipped us RIGHT into this place after we left the tour....
I don't have enough words to describe "The Sugar Shack Dessert Co" on Main Street...because not only is the place ADORABLE...
They sold some of the best treats I've ever tasted. Like, off the charts good! We decided to split 2 treats....one being the MAPLE Cannoli! YES..I said MAPLE CANNOLI!! HELLLLO!
And it was delicious...but the most incredible treat was that PEANUT BUTTER MAPLE CUPCAKE!!!!! Not only was the CAKE spot-on perfect (not too dry or dense), but the Maple/Peanut Butter combo was QUITE a tasty surprise. The love grows deeper:)
And it also wasn't too shabby sipping hot apple cider (with cinnamon stick:) while watching the snow fall from INSIDE!:)
But it wasn't long before we found ourselves here....
The Adirondack Chocolate Candy Man??? Yes, please! It was SUPER tough to narrow down our eats:
But in the end, I went with a butter crunch toffee....
And a (no shocker here) maple cup:) Both were hard to be bad, right??
And yes...the snow continued to fall....
After shopping till we dropped, we decided that going back to the room and changing for dinner wasn't even worth it. So we sloshed our wet sneakers and near-knee length soaked jeans into the closest restaurant we could find, which turned out to be the "Northwood Inn"...
Which also did pretty well in the 'cozy deparment'...
...although my icy feet could have used those 2 fireplaces from the night before...let me tell ya! :)
But since we were "out of fireplaces"...we had to rely on some French Onion Soup to warm us up. It worked...a little:)
And as good as all of the entrees sounded, I kept going back to the appetizer of Baked Double Brie coated with walnuts and brown sugar....along with the French bread baguette, it just HIT. THE. SPOT!
Even though I was a little jealous, since Scott got NOT ONLY the baked potato, but some of the BEST Chicken Franchise EVER! (Note to self to throw a boatload of minced garlic on the finished product!)
And for dessert...we both had our own selections. For her: a warm caramel apple pie with ice cream. For him: Peanut butter pie with hijacked ice cream:) Perfection:)
And after this dinner, we were so BEYOND ready to head back to the room and at the very least, remove our shoes which had now turned into near CANOES from all the rain & slush....
And just maybe, while catching up on some "Ghost Adventures" we cracked open some of these....
The perfectly cozy end to a lovely (albeit COLD!) day:)
And one last stop at "The Sugar Shack" for some of THE BEST CHOCOLATE EVER to enjoy on our snowy ride home....
Well, thankfully-not too snowy of a ride:) By the time we were an hour away, the rain and snow had ceased and we lucked out with a sunny ride home:) Hope you enjoy our little trip recap and maybe showed you a few places you might be interested in checking out! As far as I'm concerned, Lake Placid is #1! :)
I'll be back to blogging about dinners tomorrow...BUTTTTTTTTTT that won't last too long since I'll be off on ANOTHER FALL destination for a long weekend. Hope you enjoy the travel blogs (and the few more to come soon) and have a great Thursday!
